Soldiers rescue 14 pregnant teenagers, 8 children in Abia

Soldiers from 144 Battalion, Asa, in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State have rescued 14 pregnant teenagers and eight children from a motherless babies’ home at Umunkpeyi Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

Also arrested by the soldiers were six young men, who claimed to be staff of the home, and two girls, aged 16 and 25.

However, the proprietress of the home, Mrs. Nma Charity, is still at large.

It was gathered that Mrs. Charity claimed to be running a government-approved home, but engages in child trafficking and hiring of men who impregnates the teenage girls.

Sources told Vanguard that on delivery, each girl got N20,000, while their babies were sold for between N80,000 and N150,000 for females and males, respectively.

One of the suspects, who was caught at Eke-Akpara in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area, while trying to steal a baby, confessed that he had been in the business with Mrs. Charity for a long period, stating that his role was to steal a child and deliver it to the her, who in turn sold it to her customers.

Acting on the confession of the suspect, the Commanding Officer 144 Battalion, Lt. Col. Omolori Rasheed, ordered his men to raid the home where about 14 pregnant teenagers and six young men were arrested, while the proprietress of the home was away at the time of the raid.

A soldier, who declined to have his name in print, told Vanguard that the babies, between the ages of one and six, and the pregnant teenagers, would be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters, NAPTIP, while the other persons would be handed over to the police for prosecution.

Nollywood mourns Muna Obiekwe

Lagos—Nollywood on Sunday lost another vibrant actor, Muna Obiekwe, to the cold hands of death.

Obiekwe’s sudden demise came few months after another Nollywood actor Clems Onyeka was felled by a stray bullet in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The actor, who has a knack for acting romantic scenes reportedly slumped Sunday evening at his Lagos home, and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.

The cause of his death is yet to be ascertained but there are indications that the actor may have died of a kidney-related disease.

Sources close to the actor said he had been battling an undisclosed ailment, but hid it from his colleagues in the movie industry for a long time.

President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria,AGN,Ibinabo Fiberesima-Egbuka, who spoke to Vanguard   yesterday said, “It’s sad that Muna is no more. We didn’t know he was sick. Maybe, he didn’t want anybody to know about his sickness.”

Also, sources further said the actor’s drinking habit may not be unconnected to his death.

Before his demise, Muna was said to have been planning to organize a charity concert to raise money for his treatment.

Until his death, the Enugu-based actor was one of the controversial actors in the Nigerian movie industry.

It was also alleged that the actor had not gone for his dialysis for over two weeks prior to his demise.

Photos: Tiger Woods front tooth knocked out by cameraman in Italy

One of the tooth of legendary golfer Tiger Woods was knocked out today by an overeager cameraman as he was about to surprise his girlfriend Lindsey Vonn after she won a World Cup event in Italy.

"During a crush of photographers at the awards' podium at the World Cup event in Italy, a media member with a shoulder-mounted video camera pushed and surged towards the stage, turned and hit Tiger Woods in the mouth,' Woods' agent Mark Steinberg said.

Tiger had no choice but to reveal the gap in his teeth as he congratulated his girlfriend. The media and fans at the event didn't even know Tiger was there as he had covered his face with a mask in a bid to stay undiscovered until he revealed himself to his girlfriend. It failed as he was trampled..

Meanwhile, the tooth that fell is seen here in 2011 discolored.

44 Nigerian soldiers reportedly detained in underground cell in Jos

 

44 soldiers who were dislodged from the Nigerian army after failing to fight Boko Haram members on Oct. 28th 2014 are currently being detained under a military cell in Jos, Plateau state, according to a report by Premium Times.

The 44 soldiers including 5 staff Sergeants, 2 Sergeants, 5 Corporals, 18 Lance Corporals, and 14 Privates were dislodged from the army after members of Boko Haram dislodged them from Mubi town in Adamawa state. They were detained for 10 days and then moved into the underground cell where they have been since then. The soldiers have not yet been arraigned before any panel nor their charges read to them.

 

The soldiers affected are Ali Bako, Daramola Segun, Zakariya jibrin, Abdulrazaq Ahmed, and Abdulhamid Musa; Sergeants – Damiel Sunday, Ajayi Danladi; Corporals – Elijah Bisuakefe, Bulus Andrew, Adamu Ladan, Ponmark jatau, and Kurmi Rumu; Lance Corporal – Chilaka Pius, Kuyoro Joseph, Lawal Asheik, Friday Jacob, Oyinah Ifubaraboye, Abubakar Haruna, Abbas Iliyasu, Clement Ebong, Odesanya Olatunji, Gilbert Paul, Abdullahi Kamal, Olayinka Aremu, Tumba Ignatius, Yakubu Kyari, Danjuma Kadiri, Emmanuel James, Musa Isah, and Isah Mohammed; Privates – Tijani Adamu, Ibrahim Aliyu, Suleiman Bali, Musa Abu, Peter Saiynan, Williams Ojeje, Mohammed Yakubu, Adebayo Damilola, Joseph Sampson, Adagunodo Oluwafemi, Amos bala, Familola Johnson, Jesse Nunaya, and Ekpong Orem.

30 Days in Atlanta has been declared the highest grossing movie of all time in the history of Nigeria. Gone Too Far Impresses Cinema Guests

Few weeks ago we announced the release of the highly anticipated British Nigerian Comedy starring the hugely talente‎d and handsome OC Ukeje. 

Well, the film started its run in Nigerian cinemas on Friday and all indications are that it is living to the hype of being not just a well made film but every bit funny throughout the entire 90 minutes. Some cinema customers went as far as comparing it to Nigeria's biggest boxoffice smash hit '30 Days in Atlanta' in terms of the comedy elements.

One of the guests we spoke to at the Filmhouse Cinema, Samonda Ibadan said 'wow, I don't think there was any 5 minutes throughout the film that I wasn't laughing really hard that tears were flowing, what a lovely film, one that everyone should see to put them in a nice mood'

Boko Haram frees 20 captured in Cameroon

 According to BBC, 20 out of the 80 people captured by members of Boko Haram in a cross-border attack in North Cameroon yesterday January 18th have been freed. Cameroon's defence ministry in a statement released today said the hostages were freed "as defence forces pursued the attackers who were heading back to Nigeria". Boko Haram yesterday launched a fierce attack on some villages in Cameroon, capturing 80 people, most of them children.

A suspected internet fraudster, Emeofa Michael Ikechukwu has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for allegedly obtaining the sum of One hundred thousand United States Dollars from a Dane, Hengameh Misepasi in a romance scam. Ikechukwu who also go by the alias, Michael Briggs , was picked up in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, by the Commission’s operatives following a petition from the Nigerian Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden.

YOU probably may not see anything Nokia Lumia anywhere in the mobile market again. This gradual phase out began April last year when Microsoft completely took over the ailing Nokia mobile devices arm. However, since then Microsoft had deliberately allowed the name roll undisturbed. But now, it seems the software giant feels time is ripe for Nokia to go.

For the first time since it made that acquisition Microsoft has decided to sign its name on a mobile phone again. Apparently beginning with its latest release, the Microsoft Lumia 535 Dual Sim 3G Smartphone, the industry could give up the hope of seeing  Nokia Lumia series and get prepared for more Microsoft series.

Although it’s been long Microsoft signed on a mobile phone, it appears the software company is ready to get every mistake of the past corrected on its own brand of the Lumia devices.

Arsenal stun City at Etihad

Arsenal leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspurs, and moved into fifth place following their shock 2-0 win over champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

  Santi Cazorla scored the first goal for the Gunners when he put away a 24th minute penalty following a foul in the box by Vincent Kompany on Nacho Monreal.

The Champions managed to keep the score at 1-0 in a tepid first half that saw them make no attempt on Arsenal goal.

Then, the home side came out with all guns blazing in the second half, but saw their multiplied efforts rebuffed by an unusually resolute Arsenal defence.

Then, the Gunners secured closure when Olivier Giroud ran onto a pin-point Cazorla free kick to score the second with the City defence caught flat footed.

Arsene Wenger then confirmed the new Arsenal philosophy of ‘holding what you have’, by sending on Kieran Gibbs and Mathieu Flamini for the final 10 minutes, as Man City threatened.
